The Board noted that Rika Verwey had started at SAPPO after leaving
the NAMC. She understands government and will be adding new value.
She started earlier than planned but was eager to come.
8.6 Business Development
BTA
Johann Kotzé reported that there was a concern that training would be
jeopardised due to the closure of BTA during the Covid-19 lockdown. It
was then decided to start with on-line training.
The first module was filmed with Kgadi Senyatsi conducting the lectures.
A virtual tour was filmed as if the students were at the piggery. The
practical side will remain important in future. This is a new venture and
very time consuming.
The videos will become available on YouTube. The courses will not
currently be accredited by AgriSETA although they might become
accredited in future.
BDMs
The BDMs were gathering data from the mentees as well as from various
other small-scale farmers. Currently SAPPO knows of 268 small-scale
farmers of whom it has been unaware previously. The farmers’ details,
such as the owner, telephone number and where the sows are kept, are
now available.
BDMs are managing the statistics. They have all the information of the
farm through the BDM App. They go through the feed, housing,
marketing, etc. with the farmer and identify areas of interest. This requires
a lot of work but produces a lot of data. The industry can now see and
understand the areas of concern to farmers.
The available data that SAPPO has puts the industry in a better position
when it becomes necessary to negotiate with the NAMC and other
relevant stake holders.
Although SAPPO did not provide funding, it did provide solutions and
services and linked people to one another.
8.7 Corporate Governance
The Board took note of the Covid-19 protocol attached as an
addendum.
