Information on the informal market will also be included in the research.
The informal market is not fully understood.
ASF
SAPPO compiled videos on ASF that were converted into 9 little comic
strip flyers, translated into 7 ethical languages and distributed by the
BDMs, veterinarians and government officials.
8.4 Research and Development
The Board noted that Prof. Phillip Strydom had been appointed at the
University of Stellenbosch on an education programme. SAPPO
contributed financially to ensure that he will not be lost to the meat
industry. He will be available to conduct classes at various universities. It
was seen as a good investment with a focus on meat where his
knowledge plays a major role.
A proposal from OVI via government was to have someone at OVI
overseeing the risk of diseases in South Africa. Negotiations with
government were underway to manage diseases overall in South Africa.
It was important to alert the right people so that they know what was
going on in animal health. This applied to all notifiable diseases and
should be handled as well as possible.
8.5 Business Intelligence
Data Platform
The WoP was ongoing. It was hard work to get all the required data to
make it available to registered producers.
SAPPO is in the final stages with a process to place all the abattoir prices
on the database.
Trends over the past 5 years should be visible on the WoP. SAPPO joined
hands with cattle producers and will also attempt to involve chicken in
future. The meat trade may in future consist of imports and exports of all
relevant species.
The pilot project with Lynca Meats was ongoing and involves
digitalisation of the loading process of pigs delivered at Lynca Meats. It
was rolled out with the cooperation of some producers to sort out any
problems there might be. The process will be kept as simple as possible
with the main focus on traceability.
