MUSIC THEORY II
Level: IV- Honors Credits: 05
Music Theory II is an honors level course that is the logical continuation of Music Theory I. The course will
consist of exercises, both aural and written, addressing the various elements of music with emphasis placed on
harmonic structure. The majority of the course will consist of part writing in the technique practiced during
Baroque period and represented by its composer, J. S. Bach. Study will consist of analysis and construction of
chorales in standard 4 part harmony (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass) from a given soprano line or a given bass
line. Students will be required to become proficient in the “figured bass” representation of notation.
Additionally, students will be asked to sight sing, identify chords by sound, and take melodic, harmonic and
rhythmic dictation. Sometime will be devoted to listening to various musical examples as well as doing some
basic arranging. Pre-requisite: Music Theory I.
OVERTONES
Level: IV- Honors Credits: 05
This honors-level course is for the advanced choral student. Students will be expected to function at a high
level of musicianship and vocal ability. Repertoire will include the most challenging high school as well as
college-level octavos. Students will develop the knowledge and skills that strengthen their aesthetic musical
awareness. They will develop the ability to evaluate and demonstrate an appreciation for music as an art form,
and music related careers. Students will develop an understanding of the potential for music in interdisciplinary
relationships with all curricula. Rotating group lessons are offered as part of this course to advance each member’s
growth. Students are REQUIRED to perform at a variety of functions throughout the year.
Pre-requisite: One year of Concert Choir or Chamber Singers and a successful audition
PIANO TECHNIQUES
Level: II- College Preparatory Credits: 2.5
The Piano Techniques class is designed for the music student who desires instruction on the piano. Piano keyboard
skills will be taught in a small group or individual instructional setting. Student will acquire a core of basic playing
and reading skills; more advanced students will be able to progress according to their abilities. To achieve this,
students should expect to participate in independent practice, self- directed activities and performance-based
evaluations. This class is intended for students who have previously demonstrated strong interest or talent in
music.
PIANO TECHNIQUES II
Level: II – College Preparatory Credits: 05
Advanced Piano Techniques will provide experienced pianists the opportunity to improve their technical and
artistic skills. Students will explore repertoire of the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern eras. Activities
will include individual practice, ensemble playing, written and aural theory drills and a performance project. This
class is intended for self-motivated music students who can successfully participate in a self-directed activity.
