Fact – Genesis 9, Scripture has been used to justify
racism: Another example where scripture has been
misused to justify “racial” division and the subjugation
of the so-called black race is the story of Noah and his
son Ham. (Incidentally, Noah had three sons, Shem, Ham
and Japheth.) In Genesis 9:1, it states that GOD blessed
Noah and his sons. Ham, whose name literally means
black was blessed of GOD. Ham had four sons, Cush,
Mizraim, Put, and Canaan, all having dark skin. Because
of an indiscretion by Ham (Genesis 9:22), Noah cursed
Ham’s son Canaan with a curse declaring, cursed be
Canaan! The lowest of slaves will he be to his brothers
(Genesis 9:25). It is this verse that has been used to
obscure the truth and to justify enslavement,
subjugation, and discrimination of an entire people
group for centuries.
Truth – Genesis 9 Dark skin does not justify slave
status: GOD did not curse Ham. Neither did Noah. Ham
was blessed by GOD. Furthermore, Noah didn’t curse all
of Ham’s sons. He only cursed Canaan. So, what is the
lineage of Ham and his sons? Ham became the father of
the people of Egypt. Cush became the father of the
people of Ethiopia. Mizriam was the founder of Egypt.

Put founded Libya . Notice, Ham and three of his sons
all settled and prospered in Africa. They were not under
a curse and were not relegated to slave status. Canaan,
