Corruption of Bribery

Chapter 6 : Corruption in the “Carbon World”

                                                   Compulsory Participant

                                         Corporate Parasites and
                                           Social Organised
                                        Responsibility
                                                                        Crime

                                                    Investors in Carbon

Figure 6. 1: Players in the Carbon World
Compulsory participants are those – like Large Carbon Producers (LCPs‐ see page xx) ‐ who are
legally bound to reduce emissions under the Kyoto Protocol as well as companies that have
adopted Corporate Social Responsibility programs and voluntarily offset emissions, so that they
become carbon neutral are, in another. The third category of “Investors” includes banks,
financiers, speculators and others who with honest intent enter the world to help and to make
profits. Finally, and it is a very important category – are “Parasites and Organised Crime”. These
are players in the market whose primary goal is to defraud and corrupt. Their presence, which is
substantial, perverts everything and they drive a lot.

Obviously, managers and companies who genuinely believe in the “global warming” narrative
will take an entirely different position towards emission reductions and costs to those who are
unconvinced or do not believe a word of it. Thus the first step is for companies to specify their
policy on “global warming” and to what extent support of the "noble cause" will influence their
               commercial decisions.

               PRINCIPLE
As with the Bribery Act (see page xx), companies should decide to what extent they
philosophically support the "noble cause" of "global warming" and then plan accordingly

2 THE FRAMING OF GLOBAL WARMING

               2.1 Worthless Reframing
Believers in global warming have set a frame and seized the moral “high ground” that will be
difficult to shift, even if the underlying science is finally discredited. This is a distinct possibility
with uncertainty being one of the reasons the carbon market is so flat.
