First Animal Convention

M r. IJridx : E ach man fixes his price. You must be fair

in stating the condition of the tool. 1 hat is the one thing1in making
a system of this kind successful.
                        M r. M e c k e l : Any price we have to the consumer is subject
to a discount of ten per cent to the dealer.

                        M r. W r i g i i t : We find that opinions dififer as to what are
second hand tools. W e may have something which we think is
very good, and the other fellow may not think so. Who will be
                   responsible for it ?
M r. R rio x : A man buying tools should pay the freight both
                   ways.
                         M r. W ig g le s w o rtii : We have a system of selling strictly
for cash price. If the goods are returned we return the money.
                   That works out all right.
                         M r. S c o t t : Our experience in selling second hand machinery
is we insist invariably, where it is practicable, to have the purchaser
come and see the tools. They are to pay the freight.

                         I ' r k s i o h n t S t r o n g : Some time ago I received a list from
Hill, Clarke & Co.. and 1 was very much impressed with the way
that tliev were doing business. I would like to have Mr. \\ iggles-
worth enter more into detail as to how he does it.
                         M r. W ig g le s w o rtii : To guard against trouble with second
hand tools, and also to protect the customer from getting some
thing lie doesn't want, if he is willing to take your word he should
be willing to pay freight both ways. We make him pay spot cash.
They can set the goods up and try them for a week, or a month,
as long as they ship them hack in good condition, and if they are
sent hack we return the money. The machines returned are about
one-fourth of one per cent. If the man has not paid for it. the
                    more wrenches he finds missing.

M r. McDo w ell: Another good suggestion is getting a blue
print or photograph of second hand tools. We lxmght a camera,
and have a voung man who is a regular expert at such work.
When a man wants a cut of a machine we take a photograph and
send it to him with a complete description. Many times vou can

sell the tools be mail, and the man need not come to Chicago.
