First Annual Convention i*l
was absolutely agreed to, and no committee has any authority
to modify it. It is only the neglect of someone connected with the
Manufacturers' Association. We should have had that four
months ago.
M r. S cott : The question is whether that will cover it.
Mr. B rown : We have had experience like that, but in
every case, according to this new contract which it is proposed
we adopt in connection with the manufacturers, the agent in whose
territory the machinery is shipped has the right to charge back
to the manufacturer an amount equal to his commission on the
machinery. There have been cases where machines were shipped
from abroad and held over the agent as a club to keep him down
in his trade.
M r. B rion : I know in New York that as a picker-up of
some of these combination tools, Mr. Prentiss insists I shall
get the name of the town and the customer. If it goes through
we never get a cent.
P resident S trong : Mr. Puchta, have you a resolution that
you wish to present at this meeting?
M r. P uchta : It was on the line of the duty of the Associa
tion towards the man who upholds the re-sale price idea. I
think it eminently proper for this convention to take some action
recognizing the work that the manufacturers have already done
in that line, and if it is agreeable to you I would like to read a
resolution which I have drawn up.
“Resolved that this Convention of the National Supply &
Machinery Dealers’ Association heartily endorses the action of
the manufacturers who have established re-sale prices on their
goods.
“Be it further resolved that the members of this Association
co-operate with such manufacturers in every possible manner to
encourage and establish this policy.”
M r. P attison : I second the motion.
P resident S tro ng: Before the question is put, would it
be proper to insert in Mr. Puchta’s very clear resolution a sugges
tion that the manufacturers adopt the rebate plan as a method of
enforcing it?
