                               MathCounts - More than Competition

Fear Math - Love Math: MathCounts is more than a competition. Learn how to enhance
your students’ Math SuperPowers through MathCounts.

NCTM Principles to Actions: Implementing Tasks that Promote Reasoning and Problem Solving, Building Procedural Fluency from
Conceptual Understanding, Supporting Productive Struggle in Learning Mathematics
                                               Marguerite McClam, PE

                                       Palmetto Consulting Engineering Group, Inc.

Just Drop the Ball and Avoid Misconceptions

We often “toss a ball” to model quadratics. Participants will explore how this could lead
to misconceptions and explore better alternatives for modeling.

NCTM Principles to Actions: Implementing Tasks that Promote Reasoning and Problem Solving, Using and Connecting
Mathematical Representations, Facilitating Meaningful Mathematical Discourse, Posing Purposeful Questions, Supporting
Productive Struggle in Learning Mathematics, Eliciting and Using Evidence of Student Thinking

Health Sciences + Math = Student Engagement

We are a continuum of schools working to engage our students in the STEAMM theme. Seeing double?
Double M's! Yes, we have two. Math and Medical! Turns out these neighbors can work together in
harmony. In this session our team would like to share with you how we have found fun connections
between math and health sciences that pack a strong punch in student engagement. Come get your heart
pumping and your brain thumping with Med Pro 21!

NCTM Principles to Actions: Establishing Mathematics Goals to Focus Learning, Implementing Tasks that Promote Reasoning and
Problem Solving, Using and Connecting Mathematical Representations, Posing Purposeful Questions, Supporting Productive
Struggle in Learning Mathematics, Eliciting and Using Evidence of Student Thinking
