C. Summary
1. Suggest means to give a suggestion i.e., to introduce or propose
an idea or a plan for someone’s consideration.
2. Offers means to give something physical or abstract to someone,
which can be taken as a gift or a trade.
3. The social function of suggestions and offers is to facilitate
interpersonal communication between different people.
4. Examples of suggestions: I suggest that you take a driving course,
Let’s go to the museum, Why don’t we take a walk to the park?
5. Examples of offers: can I help you? Would you like me to take you
home? Shall I get you something to drink?
6. Expressions of asking suggestions: Let’s …, Why don’t we …? How
about …? I suggest that …, We could …
7. Expressions of asking offers: May I …? Can I …? Shall I …? Would
you …? How about I …?
8. Expressions of accepting suggestions: That sounds great, Yes,
please, ok, thanks.
9. Expressions of declining suggestions: Sorry, I can’t, No, I’d rather
not, No, thank you.
10. Expressions of accepting offers: That would be very kind of you,
Sure. I really appreciate it, Yes, please. Thank you
11. Expressions of declining offers: It’s okay, I can do it myself, No,
thanks. Don’t bother, No, thank you.
