Security breach at India’s parliament on 22nd
anniversary of deadly a ack
Two unidentified individuals breached the lower house of India's parliament on Wednesday, marking a
significant security lapse on the anniversary of a deadly attack on the complex more than two decades ago.
Video footage broadcast live on Sansad TV, the official channel for the country's parliament, captured a man
vaulting over tables and charging toward the speaker's chair, eliciting panic among lawmakers attempting to
restrain him. Simultaneously, another
individual in the visitor's gallery was
observed releasing yellow smoke
within the building.
In response to the intrusion, the
parliamentary session was briefly

evacuating the premises. Outside,
two additional individuals were
spotted chanting slogans as the
police assembled around them. All
four individuals were promptly
arrested, and their possessions
confiscated, according to Om Birla,
the speaker of the parliament's lower
house, who briefed lawmakers when the session resumed.
Expressing their concerns, opposition lawmakers underscored the gravity of the security breach. "The issue
is very serious," remarked Mallikarjun Kharge, leader of India's main opposition Congress party. K.C.
Venugopal, another Congress lawmaker, described the incident as "extremely troubling," emphasizing the
need for accountability.
"I am glad there was no major injury or damage done to anyone," Venugopal wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
"Parliament is among the most high-security buildings in our country. Such a significant security lapse is
unacceptable. We demand answers from the Home Ministry, and there must be a thorough review of the
security arrangements in the new Parliament building."
India's parliament suffered a devastating attack on December 13, 2001, when gunmen killed over a dozen
people. New Delhi attributed the assault to Pakistan-linked terror groups, escalating tensions and bringing
the two nuclear-armed nations to the brink of war. On the same day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid
tribute to the lives lost in the 2001 attack, expressing heartfelt condolences for the courage and sacrifice of
the security personnel. "Their valor in the face of danger will forever be etched in our nation's memory," Modi
conveyed on X.
