An earthquake in northwestern China kills at least
131 people and is the deadliest in 9 years
An intense overnight earthquake shook a
mountainous area in northwestern China,
officials reported on Tuesday, resulting in the
destruction of homes, forcing residents into the
freezing night, and claiming 131 lives in the
country's most lethal quake in nine years.
The earthquake, measuring a magnitude of 6.2,
struck just before midnight on Monday, causing
injuries to over 700 people, disrupting
infrastructure such as roads, and causing power
and communication outages in the provinces of
Gansu and Qinghai.
While emergency personnel searched for missing individuals in the debris and dealt with at least one
landslide, those who lost their homes endured a chilly winter night in tents set up at hastily arranged
evacuation sites.
