Failure Resistant Material Systems:
What Can Predictions Provide?
Thurston Lecture Award to Mohammed A. Zikry for pioneering
contributions to mechanics of materials, computational
mechanics, multiscale modeling, materials science and
fracture mechanics; and for significant and groundbreaking
interdisciplinary contributions related to metals, alloys,
composites and biomaterials at physical scales ranging from
nano to micro.
Biography: Mohammed A. Zikry is the Zan
Prevost Smith Professor at North Carolina
State University in the Department of
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
He has led research efforts pertaining to
multiscale computational material modeling
and mechanics for materials systems spanning the nano to
the micro scales. He has received the Jefferson Science
Fellowship (advisor to the Secretary of State, U.S. State
Department), Senior Research Fulbright Award, the RJ
Reynolds Award, the ALCOA Distinguished Research Award,
and the Ralph Teetor Research Award from the Society of
Automotive Engineering. He has been awarded a Professeur,
Premiere Classe, Strasbourg University (France), and he is a
Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of
Science (AAAS), the Society of Engineering Science (SES), the
American Society of Mechanical Engineering (ASME), the editor
in Chief of the ASME Journal of Engineering Materials and
Technology, the Regional Editor for Mechanics of Materials,
and was the Chair of the Executive Committee of ASME’s
Material’s Division. He has been a senior research advisor to
the Army Research Office. He received his Ph.D. from the
University of California, San Diego, his M.S. from the Johns
Hopkins University, and his B.S. from the University of Kansas.

In this forum, National Science Foundation (NSF) will provide
various avenues for the IMECE community to interact with
program directors from the Civil, Mechanical and Manufac-
turing Innovation (CMMI) Division and the Chemical, Bioengi-
neering, Environmental, and Transport Systems (CBET) Division.
Plenary: NSF-CMMI Overview and Outreach Panel

In this panel, a brief overview of the Civil, Mechanical and
Manufacturing Innovation (CMMI) division will be provided with
emphasis on recent changes in organizational structure as well
as funding opportunities. The floor will then be opened to
participants to address program directors representing
materials, mechanics and manufacturing programs.
