When you hear yourself speaking or thinking the word need, pay attention.
It is true that you need food and water, air, shelter, and love, but most of
what you imagine you need you simply want (though in some cases you
may want it very badly). Someone, sometime, started the rumor that to tell
loved ones that we need them is a compliment. But think for a moment.
Would you feel better inside if someone said to you that they really “need”
you, or if they said, “I really love you and I want to be with you?”
Replacing the word need with the word want can be a powerful tool in
taming your gremlin.
I counsel many couples who believe on a deep level that they need each
other. When there is this sort of intense need between people, there is also
intense mutual resentment. It is quite beautiful and freeing when these
