Gold Winner

If Charity can begin at home why not Continuous
Improvement? That was the thought in Mayur's mind
when he decided that the concept of 5S that he had learnt
at NIQC need not be deployed only at office but can be very
well used at home as well.

He built his team to deploy the same and the team comprised of his
spouse Meenakshi and his son Saksham. They decided to first make a plan of
action. They identified all the areas which needed to be sorted out in their
house. They segregated the areas and chose the areas they would work upon.

They made it a competition to see whose area would shine better. Next they each
started taking stock of what all needed doing to make the complete home a better living
place. So the cleaning and sorting began in earnest.

They found a huge amount of waste they were carrying which was occupying unnecessary
space. This gave birth to another initiative “Best from Waste” this helped with sustenance of 5S
as on a continual basis all the waste which was not displosable was re deployed in making crafts
and home decorations.

The entire house soon had a nice feel to it and became a much more pleasant home filled with
happiness and cleanliness which of course we all know is next to Godliness. The gardens were also
not spared and there was an orderliness got into the way the plants were arranged etc. to ensure
that they got the adequate amount of rain and shine as required so that they could grow well and
the display looked Aesthetic.

Thus did Mayur put on his thinking hat to deploy 5S at home and make everyone stand up and
understand that many of the Lean concepts do find application at home as well. 5S and Poka Yoke
he learnt at NIQC was what inspired Mayur to make his house a safe and pleasant home.

In doing this and projecting it as a project he won an award as well during the DN Business
Excellence Awards held in October 2020. The whole family gathered together to receive the Gold
Award from the chief guest. It was glorious to see all the smiling faces.
