Specialty Elective Courses for Pediatric Nursing
NUR 585 (Nursing management of high-risk neonates course)
Seminar discussion of common newborn variations and pathological conditions.
Selected clinical practice/observations with sick newborn.
NUR 588 (Pediatric Methods for Infant & Young Children)
Intensive experience with small number of infants and young children and their
families in hospital, home and clinic settings. Identification and analysis of
problems arising from physical and psychological alterations due to illness and
concomitant alterations in family dynamics; development of research and theory-
based nursing approaches.
NUR 589 (Special Studies in Maternal & Child Health Nursing)
It provides for alternative learning experiences, independent study, development of
specific clinical competencies, classes focusing on a variety of special interest
topics within the broad category of maternal and child nursing. Selected problems
are investigated under the direction of the faculty, encouraging independent inquiry
of online resources.

Midwifery Specialty

NUR 536 (Nurse Midwifery Process 1)
Theory in the nurse- Midwifery management of healthcare for women since puberty
through menopause. The physiological, social and emotional components of
antepartum and early postpartum care are emphasized. Focuses on the assessment of
departures from the expected obstetrical course and their implications for medical
management. Considers social, cultural and demographic factors influencing the
role of the nurse- midwife in providing care. Uses current research findings as a
basis for assessment and management.
NUR 537 (Nurse-Midwifery Process II)
Clinical practicum of nurse-midwifery during the antepartum and early postpartum
stages of pregnancy. Focuses on the development of physical assessment skills and
midwifery management of the individual care of antepartum and immediate
postpartum women. Both normal and high-risk aspects of care of clients are
explored in accordance with the management process.

NUR 538 (Nurse-Midwifery Process III)

Theory in the nurse midwifery management of clients in the intrapartum and
neonatal periods. Content includes anatomy and physiology relevant to care of
intrapartal women, review of labor support and physical needs, theory of neonatal
adaptation to extrauterine life, resuscitation, management of selected obstetrical
emergencies and the implications for referral.
