Elective Courses for Medical Surgical Nursing Specialty
NUR 590 (Respiratory and Cardiovascular Nursing)
Exploration of selected programs, trends, and issues in respiratory and
cardiovascular health care. Emphasis on the utilization of basic methods of
assessing respiratory and cardiovascular function in health and illness with
emphasis on their application to clinical nursing practice
591 (Oncology Nursing)
Basic knowledge from biological, behavioural, and medical sciences for
understanding the development, diagnosis, treatment, and prognosis of cancer. The
focus is on the assessment and special physical and psychosocial problems of
patients. Practicum includes participation in nursing management of person with
various types of malignancies
NUR 592 (Clinical Decisions in Critical Care)
Focuses on Developing advanced clinical skills in the nursing care of critically ill
patients. Clinical preceptors provide direction in the application of knowledge of
nursing, biopsychosocial, and behavioural sciences. Emphasis is also placed on
applying principles, methods, and procedures in utilizing technological
instrumentation as adjuncts to clinical decision making in critical care.
NUR 593 (Clinical Conference in Medical-Surgical Nursing)
Multiple sections in medical surgical subspecialties (renal, cardiac, respiratory,
metabolic, neurological etc..) students examines the content of one subspecialty in
depth. The practicum focuses on the implementation of the role of the clinical
nurse specialist and on increasing the expertise of the nurse in meeting patients
needs.
Nursing Management Specialty
NUR 560 (Nursing Service Administration)
This course introduces the student to the elements and practices of nursing service
administration. Organizational theory and basic concepts of management are
explored as related to nursing. The relationship between the disciplines of
administration, health administration and nursing administration are addressed.
Emphasis is placed upon administrative processes within nursing organization(s),
organizational design, measuring organizational effectiveness, as well as integration
of research.
