Elective Courses for Community Health Nursing Specialty
NUR 577 (Gerontology Nursing)
This course will provide the students with selected theories & concepts will be
investigated as they affect bio-psycho-social functioning of the elderly. Emphasis
on psychosomatic, acute and long –term illnesses and their interplay with social –
psychological problems of the elderly. Clinical practice in acute, long –term or
community settings, depending on the student's background and interest.
NUR 578 (School Health)
Examine factors and programs that contribute to the promotion and maintenance of
health in the school population. Nursing interventions are directed toward
population groups at risk. Issues, legislation & organizations involved in school
health are explored.
Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Specialty Courses
NUR 520 (Theoretical Basis of Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing)
Examination of the theories from psychiatric, behavioral and social sciences as
applied to psychiatric mental health nursing. Review of normal psychosocial
development throughout the lifespan. Assessment coping mechanisms,
socioeconomic, cultural and religious, legal and political influences affecting the
role of the client. Critique of pertinent research.
NUR 521 (Clinical Assessment in Psychiatric Mental Health Nursing)
Focuses on therapeutic process with individuals experiencing psycho-social
disturbances. The specific aim is a critical examination of the concepts and
strategies which affect assessment of psychological behavior. Using an
interpersonal approach, the students provide direct care to clients in a one-to-one
relationship, emphasizing physical and mental health assessment, goal setting and
evaluation.
PSY 555 (Psychopathology)
Dynamics of neuroses, psychoses and character disorders in adult. Detailed
consideration of theoretical issues and current research data bearing on major
patterns of psychological disturbance. Emphasis in the physical, psychological and
social factors contributing to mental disorders. Treatment possibilities and social
implications of these disorders.
