NUR 595 (Nurse Staffing and Scheduling)
An intensive study of nurse staffing methodologies. Patient classification tools,
methods for monitoring quality of nursing care and principles of nurse scheduling
are emphasized within the nurse staffing framework. Types of measures, techniques
of construction, strengths and limitations for use of selected methodologies for
staffing will be presented and tested in practice settings.
NUR 598 (Quality Assurance in Health Care)
The history of the development of quality assurance in health care, governmental,
professional and legal considerations, current theoretical and research issues,
quality assurance mechanisms in in-patient and community settings and cost-benefit
ratios. Practicum in the use of quality assurance methods and in developing criteria
and standards.

Maternity Nursing Specialty
NUR 530 (Normal Childbearing Families)
Selected philosophies, nursing theories and concepts applied by the professional
nurse to the promotion of growth and wellness of pregnancy and supervision of the
childbearing families. Emphasis is on nursing interventions appropriate during
pregnancy. Knowledge related to assessment and scoring techniques as it relates to
management of the pregnant women during the normal course of childbearing is
also examined. The focus is on increased practitioner skills for independent and
collaborative components of professional nursing mothers.
NUR 531 (Health Assessment and Maintenance in Maternity Nursing)
It Focuses on providing students with clinical experience that assists them to
develop expertise in meeting the physical, emotional and instructional needs of
patients during the normal course of childbearing. Anatomy and physiology of the
female reproductive system with application to complete physical and pelvic
assessments of the adult female are further refined. Clinical experience provides for
the application of communication theory, knowledge of human sexuality and skill in
interpretation of laboratory values.
NUR 532 (Physiological Basis of Childbearing)
This course examines the physiological basis of reproduction, genetics and
embryology of the newborn. It explores areas of maternal, reproductive physiology
as well as foetal physiology. Current research findings in each content area are
presented in relation to their application to the health care management of healthy
child bearing mothers.
