Pediatrics Nursing Specialty
NUR 541 (Nursing Management of Children)
This course focuses on current practices, research and issues related to the care of
children and adolescents with acute health deviations. Examines theories related to
pediatric nursing practice. Emphasis is given to developing a framework for clinical
practice based on a synthesis of biological, behavioural and nursing knowledge.
NUR 542 (Health Assessment & Maintenance in Pediatric Nursing)
The clinical course is designed to help the student to develop advanced health
assessment skills appropriate Pediatric nursing practice. Focuses on the assessment
of states of wellness and concepts related to maintenance and promotion of health
of children. Further exploration of the use of developmental and physical
assessment techniques through clinical practice in an acute care setting. Clinical
application of nursing, biological and behavioral science is stressed.
NUR 543 (Child & Family Development)
This course focuses on developmental theories and concepts that form the basis for
nursing assessment and intervention with children and families. Selected topics of
importance to child development are emphasized. Emphasis is given to current
research and issues in child development.
NUR 544 (Advanced Pediatric Nursing)
Focuses on current practices and research issues related to the care of children and
adolescents with developmental and chronic health deviations, including learning
and behavioral problems. The role of the clinical nurse specialist in promoting
optimal child/family outcomes is emphasized. Development of theory and research-
based nursing approaches is further emphasized.
NUR 545 (Responses to Physiological & Psychological Disorders)
Focuses on child responses to physiologic and psychologic disorders across the
lifespan, natural history of selected disorders, their etiology, associated diagnostic
tests, clinical manifestations and medical management including pharmacologic,
dietary and surgical measures. Physiologic, emotional, mental, social and physical
responses to these disorders, their diagnosis and medical management are
examined. Practice in the identifications and analysis of problems arising from these
disorders is provided.
NUR 546 (Advanced Clinical in Pediatric Nursing)
This clinical course focuses on the implementation of selected aspects of the clinical
nurse specialist’s role. A variety of clinical settings and experiences provide
opportunities for implementation of consulting, management and collaboration
skills. Emphasis is placed on formulating nursing strategies to assist families to
cope with illness and health problems. Clinical experiences provide for the
application of data-based theory to nursing care and the assessment and
management of the chronically ill child.
