what if he leaves this country altogether? Would you then change
your goals?”
Many of us are in this situation—we want to achieve something or
become somebody only because we have to prove ourselves to
others. This ‘other’ can be a neighbor, a relative, a friend or anyone
else. We want to spend our energy and time and be something just
to harm others or to gain false recognition from them. Is this reason
enough for you? “Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out
your own inner voice."- Steve Jobs.
Look at an egg—it gives birth to a life only when it breaks by itself.
But if an external force damages the egg, then the hatching cannot
happen and everything is over in a second. The egg is broken in
both situations but the outcomes are different. Natural hatching leads
to life- a chicken is born; but breaking the egg by applying external
force leads to death - the little chicken never comes to existence.
What you want to become in life should come from within you and
not from any external source like a friend or a relative or from
anyone in the society.
“There is a voice inside of you
That whispers all day long,
"I feel this is right for me,
I know that this is wrong."
No teacher, preacher, parent, friend
Or wise man can decide
What's right for you--just listen to
The voice that speaks inside.”
― Shel Silverstein, The Voice
Another thing that you must understand is that the world is changing
rapidly. The way in which your parents think might not be in
accordance to the present world, or perhaps they do not understand
the hustle and bustle of the present world. In this scenario it is not
mandatory for you to listen to everything that they say. However, you
must put across your dreams and aspirations politely and explain
them about your chosen career.
