Page 66 - Failure to Triumph - Journey of A Student
P. 66
One day, I was watching an interview of Australian bowling great
Glenn McGrath. In the interview he said that in old days it was said
that a fast bowler was one who knew how to bowl an outswing.
Believing in what others were saying he too tried the outswing style
of bowling. But in a Test match at The Gabba he ended up giving
away 120 runs without any wickets, and was resultantly discarded
from the team. After that he decided that he will focus only on his line
and length and he would not listen to anybody else. He started
focusing on his own strengths. He did not have a lot of pace, but he
is still counted among the best three fast and great bowlers the world
has ever seen.
Students can also learn a lot from this. Remember: only YOU know
about Your strengths and weaknesses. You cannot become like
someone else by imitating them blindly. You have to choose your
own way, stick to it, and give no ears to what others’ say. If you come
across any difficulty while studying or even in your life, try finding the
solutions yourself. Please do not think that you are going to find the
solutions to your problems in the interviews given by toppers. If you
develop the habit of searching readymade answers for all your
problems, then how are you going to develop your understanding
and thinking skills? There will be an inferiority complex in your life,
you will lack confidence and this will stop you from developing
leadership qualities. You have to become a leader, not a follower,
you have to become capable enough to show the path to the others.
You should be willing to work hard to become meritorious. ‘There is
no substitute to hard work’. But as Abraham Lincoln has said,
“Wanting to work is so rare a merit that it should be encouraged.”
Encourage yourself to work hard.
“It seems to never occur to fools that merit and good fortune are
closely united.”- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
