Towards Better Compaction

               Moorings

               Mooring lines
One of the major findings in a recent Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) report on
mooring safety was to “maintain clear and effective communications between all stations”.
Everyone involved in mooring operations should be aware of what is happening and what their role
               is.
               Basic mooring line safety:
                   • Minimise the number of personnel involved in mooring operations
                   • Beware of snapback zones – lines under stress can snap and fly into personnel causing
                       serious injury or even death
                   • Only tend to one line at a time to avoid undue stress on the remaining lines
                   • Do not exceed 55% of the lines Maximum Breaking Load (MBL)
                   • Lines should be of the same size and material
                   • Report any loose or slack mooring lines
                   • Do not climb over or under mooring lines

Although mooring lines should be actively monitored by the ship’s crew throughout the port stay,
you must immediately report any inconsistencies or potentially hazardous situations. Don’t assume
someone else will report this for you.
