Towards Better Compaction
Boarding
Gangways and ladders
According to the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA), the master of a ship is not required
to provide the means of access when the vessel is alongside. In practice, the vessel always provides
access.
Boarding of vessels in port is done using the accommodation
ladder. The accommodation ladder lies parallel to the ship facing
aft. It has an upper platform, fixed steps and foldable aluminium
handrails. The ladder is suspended by wires or arms connected
to individual winches on each side. The accommodation ladder is
erected by the ship’s crew and must include a safety net to
prevent persons falling from the accommodation ladder into the
water or onto the jetty. Do not use the accommodation ladder if
you are unsure of its safety – ask your supervisor for advice.
Always use three points of contact (two hands and one foot, or
two feet and one hand) while climbing ladders. Do not carry
anything in your hands as this reduces your ability to react if you
slip. Always wear gloves when climbing ladders or gangways.
