Towards Better Compaction
Breakdowns
Breakdowns and other maintenance issues need to be reported to minimise equipment downtime
and delays to loading. Effective communication assists in organising the correct response to a
breakdown and returning to loading as soon as possible.
Emergencies
Use the most suitable method of communication when reporting or responding to an emergency
(your local Emergency instructions provide you with specific information for your site). Pushing the
emergency stop button on your remote operations unit lets others know that there is an emergency.
Whom do we need to communicate with?
Dozer operator
Communication should be via radio, do not approach a dozer until you have a positive
acknowledgement that they have seen you, and it is safe to proceed (another form of
communication).
Ship’s crew
Although English is a common language amongst seamen, do not assume a level understanding. You
may need to use a combination of communication methods (oral, written, or sign) to ensure that
your message is received as you intended. Raising your voice (except in noisy surroundings) does not
increase understanding.
Ask questions to ensure that your message is understood as you intended it. Do not use jargon or
slang as this could confuse your listeners. If you are unsure about the level of understanding shown
by your audience, consider asking another member of the crew for assistance.
Supervisor
Reliable communication between you and your supervisor is essential to promote safe and efficient
loading techniques. If in doubt or unsure, call your supervisor for assistance (use your radio).
Remember, it is easier to resolve small problems than it is to wait until they grow and become
unmanageable.
