Jupp and Mc Erlan’s report notes. The Bothy
THE BOTHY
The bothy is situated at the back of the
north lean-to vinery and is entered
from the west. It is a 2 storied stone
building with brick trim. It has stepped
IMG_6716.JPG gables and prominent ornamental
finials. The top story is lit by an oculus.
It has 2 rooms on the ground floor and
2 above. It is described in the 1902
Sales Particulars thus : ‘young men’s
bothy, containing three bedrooms and
kitchen, affording accommodation thr
six’.
It has been unoccupied for a
considerable time and one of its last
recorded uses was for sprouting
potatoes. It is now semi-ruinous with
the roof in a very poor condition, and
the upper floors collapsed. The names
of any of the garden boys who lived
here are presently unknown. There are
a number of yellow ridge tiles with the
name ‘Hurlford’ stamped on them lying
round this area which may have come
off the roof of this building.
