Requirements for antitumor activity:
1- diosphenol group at C2-C3
2- an ester at C-15 with α,β- unsaturated group at
C2'-C3’3- a lactone carbonyl at C-16
Bruceantin, bruceantinol and bruceantarin reached the
level ofclinical trials as anticancer agents.
Bruceolides which lack ester group at C-15,e.g. Brucein-D and
E have significant antimalarial activity, but no cytotoxicity
action.
Chemical test:
With FeCl3 they give a grayish black colour.
