It is resolved into the two components by heating with benzene or
chloroform , picrotoxinin remains dissolved inbenzene where as

picrotin is insoluble in benzene

Identification Tests

picrotoxin is heated with vanillin hydrochloride solution

(0.1% w/v) → green colouration.

Uses

Itacts as CNS and respiratory stimulant (analeptic).
Picrotoxin (i.v.) is used as antidote in poisoning with
barbiturates and other narcotics.
