Poliomyelitis ,living vaccine ( using safe strain of virus)given
by mouth or dead vaccine giving by injection.
Immune sera:
Injected with an immediate supply of antibacterial ,antiviral
Antibodies or antitoxins. It is useful prophylactically in
Unvaccinated person exposed to infection and
therapeutically
In persons with established infectious disease.
Antitoxic sera -----prophylaxis & treatment of diphtheria &
tetanus .Production of antitoxins carried out in horses ,
plasma is digested with pepsin + ammonium sulphate ppt.
antitoxin --dialyzed against water----conc.by ultrafiltration.
Disadvantages: horse serum injected recognized as foreign
Protein & rapidly eliminated from the body ,also stimulate
the
production of antibodies ,reaction to horse serum occur.
Tetanus antitoxic serum prepared in sheep.Human tetanus
Immunoglobulin also available.
Antisera against the indigenous species to infiltrate the
area
at the bite ,by IV injection to neutralize circulating venom.
