The Shehecheyanu Blessing – Drinking the First Cup
Leader: Now that we have sanctified the first cup, we thank God for this special time:
All Recite:
Barukh attah Adonai, Eloheinu melekh ha’olam,
she-hecheyanu ve’ki-yemanu ve’higianu lazman hazeh
“Blessed art thou, Lord our God, Master of the universe,
who has kept us alive and sustained us and has brought us to this special time.”
This first cup represents how God chose us to be His own treasured people: “I am the
LORD, and I will free you from the burdens of the land of Egypt.” Let us drink this first
cup while leaning or reclining to the left.
