Approximately 9,000 pacemakers are needed annually in Mexico City area, with just more
than half being for people with little or no financial resources.
Note: Vickie Blade Pacemaker GG 1860595 ($165,000 for 600 pacemakers, sponsor
Kingston TN) was approved on October 23, 2018. Vickie Blade Pacemaker GG 1977662
($116,000 for 400 pacemakers, sponsor Greater St. Charles, LA) has not been started and
is not fully funded.
2. Learning to Learn GG 1746265 ($36,009, host Mixcoac, sponsor Alliance NE) –
presenter Jorge Sanchez
Jorge provided an update through use of a power point presentation. Highlights included
the following:
• Grant has provided more interactive materials and more printed materials than
previously available
• Courses are taught on weekends during the academic year only, and one
course session is usually about 6 weeks
• More teachers have been trained on how to best use all the materials
• 12 schools are currently enrolled in the program, with about 30 students per
school
• About 600 students have gone through the courses so far (fairly evenly split by
gender)
• Program works with the lowest achievers at each school
• Grant will help with long term tracking of student improvement
3. Playing, Counting and Growing GG 1754279 ($88,026, host Vallescondido, sponsor
District 6170 AR) – presenter Luis Antonio Guerrero
Antonio provided an update through use of a power point presentation. Highlights included
the following:
• The “Montessori” philosophy is used in the program
• 84 librarians have been trained so far on how to use the materials and conduct
working sessions
• Rotarians are directly involved in packing and delivering materials to the libraries
• Some deliveries to libraries have been delayed at the request of the local
governments, who will be seeing personnel changes in December as a result of
summer 2018 elections
• 37 groups and 533 children have completed the program to date
• 389 children are in the program currently
• Several cooperating institutions and clubs are involved in the grant project
• More libraries and government institutions want the program in their
communities
Note: The club included a request for a second global grant of $229,190 to expand the
program.
