From in side the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. He
said: "In my dis tress I called to the Lord, and He an swered
me... I called for help, and You lis tened to my cry. You hurled
me in to the deep, in to the very heart of the seas, and the cur -
rents swirled about me; all Your waves and break ers swept
over me... But You brought my life up from the pit, O Lord my
God. When my life was ebb ing away, I re mem bered You,
Lord, and my prayer rose to You, what I have vowed I will
make good. Salvation comes from the Lord." (Jonah, 2:1-9)
O Lord, hear my prayer, lis ten to my cry for mer cy; in Your
faith ful ness and right eous ness come to my re lief... I spread
out my hands to You; my soul thirsts for You like a parched
land. Answer me quick ly, O Lord; my spir it fails. Do not hide
Your face from me or I will be like those who go down to the
pit. Let the morn ing bring me word of Your un fail ing love, for
I have put my trust in You. Show me the way I should go, for
to You I lift up my soul. Rescue me from my en e mies, O Lord,
for I hide my self in You. Teach me to do Your will, for You are
my God; may Your good Spirit lead me on lev el ground. For
Your name's sake, O Lord, pre serve my life; in Your right -
eous ness, bring me out of troub le... (Psalms, 143:1, 6-12)
Then Hannah prayed and said: "My heart re joic es in the Lord;
in the Lord my horn is lift ed high... There is no one ho ly like
the Lord; there is no one be sides You; there is no strength like
our God... For the Lord is a God Who knows, and by Him
deeds are weighed... The Lord brings death and makes alive;
