Tractor Girls remain 100%

Southampton FC Women 0 Ipswich Town 2
In the battle of the perfect FAWNL Southern
Premier Division records it was Ipswich Town
who emerged victorious with a 2-0 away win
       over Southampton FC Women.
The much anticipated match up between
two outstanding teams went deservedly to the
Tractor Girls with two set piece goals backed up
by rock solid defending when the Saints turned
up the heat in the final half hour,
The opening half hour in front of a crowd
of close to a thousand was as tight as expected
with very little goalmouth action and plenty of
       misplaced passes. Visiting keeper Sarah
Quantrill made a smart early save from a low
shot by Lucia Kendall but was then largely All fall down…Phoebe Williams challenges Zoe Barratt

build up play but home keeper Kayla Rendell
       was equally well protected.
With the match approaching the break, a potential stalemate was broken via a free
kick taken by Abbie Lafayette from the right side some 20 yards out. A flighted delivery was
met by the head of Natasha Thomas who rose in a crowded box to guide the ball past Rendell.
Southampton needed to find another gear on the restart but instead it was the
visitors who grabbed a crucial second from another free kick delivery by Lafayette, This
time the ball was more central but the delivery just as inviting, the ball being returned by
sub Maddie Biggs from beyond the far post, leaving the scrambling Rendell stranded as
Zoe Barratt turned the ball home via the underside of the bar from close range.
Saints responded well to the double setback and poured on the pressure with a
formation change giving them more width and they built up a concerted period of
territorial domination, Ipswich were still dangerous on the break but for the most part it
was the hosts probing for a way back into the match encouraged by the home support.
Southampton earned a succession of corners and crosses from open play which were
largely met via an Ipswich head or boot, Ella Pusey went close with one half chance and
Quantrill saved well from another late run into the area.
An Alisha Ware header went over the bar and the visiting keeper held a final Laura
Rafferty effort before the Ipswich players could celebrate a fine victory with their
numerous and very vocal travelling support.
