According to daughter Holly, he was by now drinking to excess, spending a lot of time
in the garage tinkering with his cars, and talking to his family less and less - and
especially not mentioning the demons that were in his head. In fact, these demons
had been with him for many years, and his wife had foiled a suicide attempt in 1984,
when she wrestled his gun from his hand.
However, on 4th October 1994 he went to his garage and shot himself. There was no
suicide note left, so the family were left to piece together the reasons for his action,
which were probably all too obvious.
Like Roy Buchanan before him, the frustrations of the music business, together with
his ongoing mental state combined to result in death at his own hand.
Since their untimely passing, their legend has lived on, and indeed expanded, with
praise being heaped on them from all corners of the guitar playing world, from Les
Paul to Steve Vai, and this year a documentary about the life of Danny Gatton, entitled
‘The Humbler’ was released.
