TWELVE
Dan stopped at Linda’s desk on his way to Ron’s next session. “How is the pretty lady
doing today?” He asked with a bright smile. Linda responded with a joyful smile and wave of
hand. “He is waiting for you,” is all she said.
Ron was on his feet as soon as he saw Dan. They exchanged pleasantries and settled down
on the corner sofa where Dan’s steaming Starbucks coffee waited.
“How was the week Dan? I am very eager to hear your learnings.” Ron asked.
“I had a good week Ron. My biggest learning was that lose-win surrender is a step towards
win-win engagement.” Dan had decided he will not share anything about the morning event.
Ron had to control his eyebrows. “You always bring a new learning for me Dan.” He said
with a smile. “Cannot wait to hear it. Please describe the situation so that I can understand.
And please withhold the names as they will not add any value.”
Excitedly Dan narrated his Monday discussion with Tom and how his lose-win surrender
had allowed Tom to calm down and open. Tom’s name was not used.
“Interesting,” is all Ron said. He was quiet for few minutes before he asked, “Dan why do
you think it was surrender?”
“I apologized several times. I was honest and exposed my vulnerability to a subordinate. It
clearly was surrender Ron.”
