Dan was speechless as tsunami of emotions flooded him. Ron had compassionately taken
the wind off the sails of his ‘brilliant’ discovery. When he finally found his voice, it was soft
and feeble, “Thanks Ron. What I thought was profound learning just turned upside down! I
can see it clearly now; it was not surrender. Instead, I slowly and surely converted the previous
win-lose to a win-win. I successfully engaged and gained this person’s full commitment.” A
smile finally sneaked in as he completed the sentence.
“Dan your interpretation may have been different, but your handling of the conflict is
impressive and praiseworthy. It is very tough to internalize learnings so fast.”
“I may want to take credit for it as your teacher, but it will be foolhardy!” “Teaching is the
easy part; the difficult part is for the individual to consistently practice new behaviors. It makes
me so proud to see you do it so well. It will be great learning for me if you can tell how you
have achieved it.”
Dan was flushed with such expansive praise from his role model. He chose his words
thoughtfully, “Ron even I am surprised. I have had numerous trainings in my 19 years with
The Global Company. The ‘training euphoria’ remained for a few days and then, phew it
vanished. It is different this time; short-term instant elation of new learning has been replaced
by gradual awareness of wisdom. I am using big words Ron, but this is exactly how I feel.” He
