Ron paused and then added, “I want to reemphasize that control may be necessary when
the individual or team capability is low.” He got up and drew another picture. “this will
probably explain it better,” he added.
“We must allow more freedom as the individual or team capability increases; too much
autonomy when the capability is low can result in personal/ team failure and loss of
confidence. Similarly, too much control when the capability is high can stifle the team and its
creativity. Though not difficult once you are aware of it, the real challenge for a leader is to be
able to make accurate assessment of capability.”
Ron stopped speaking, intently looking at Dan and asked, “What are you thinking Dan?”
Dan was quiet for a while and then softly replied, “Ron this is a particularly important
lesson. I have often used control as the key operating style. I was wondering how I will be able
to make the change to Empathy or Compassion?”
