Dan entered his study with a purpose. He had something very important to figure out.

‘What has caused Betsy and my relationship to improve so dramatically?

This question had been at the back of his mind ever since, but he was unable to root cause

it. He was not ready to discuss it with Betsy just yet, so he wanted to find the answer himself.

He eased into the recliner and with closed eyes began comparing past few weeks vs past

few years. Though reluctant to admit, he knew that ‘negativity’ had creeped in their

relationship. Past few weeks had not only transformed it but rekindled the excitement of early

years – the days when they were discovering each other! A certain warmth filled him and made

him smile.

His thoughts wandered to his newfound learnings and how he had used them with Betsy.

While he could recount everything he did differently, the root cause of this hugely welcome

change still eluded him. Understanding the reason for this transformation was critical because

he knew that sustaining it will otherwise be impossible. Failures of their earlier attempts were

stark reminders.

‘Will it help if I first figure out what had gone wrong in our relationship?’ ‘The answer to my question may

probably lie there.’ He wondered.

He started going down the ladder of dates but was unable to pinpoint a time or incident

that could have been the possible trigger for the woes in their relationship.

‘It was a slow drift that probably took several years but accelerated once Jonathan left for college; Betsy and

I had little to talk about after that.’
