‘Did our last meeting upset him so much?’ The thought suddenly calmed and moved him out of

Control to Empathy. ‘He is certainly disappointed. I have to find a way to influence him to see me.’

He sat on his desk motionless thinking of various ways to manage this situation. He stayed

that way for a long time till Anita interrupted, “Dan, time for meeting with Bob.”

Rest of the day and week passed at furious pace. Office and home kept Dan too busy and

he did not get time to either think of or meet Tom.

Friday evening arrived faster than usual. Dan was getting ready to go for meeting with Ron

when his mobile rang. It was Linda.

“Hi Dan, hope you had a good week. I want to catch you before you come here. Thank

you for helping me make the right decision. I have decided to ignore that job offe….”

“Yippee,” exclaimed Dan, not allowing her to finish, “This is fantastic news Linda. Your

leaving would have been a huge loss for the Company.” He could almost hear Linda’s big

smile. “I will see you in a min.” He added.

Walking towards Ron’s office, he thought of the satisfying difference between old and new

Dan. Old Dan would have used these same words, but at a wrong time -- to persuade Linda

when she asked for his advice last week. Their impact would have been dramatically different

-- Instead of the inspirational complement that Linda heard now, the same words would have

been heard as an attempt to persuade her to stay, eroding the objectivity of his advice. ‘The

amazing power of effective communication,’ he thought to himself.
