After what seemed like a long silence, he spoke again, “It is not easy for me, as your boss,

to admit that I too have had the same question – why can’t I be promoted?” He paused again,

“The key difference is that unlike you I have reconciled to it. But I have promised to myself

that I will find us the answer to prevent you getting to my situation.” He hesitated again.

“I consider you to be a brilliant individual and one of the best at your level. That I have not

been able to push your case in Joe’s Leadership Team has been cause of deep frustration and

dissatisfaction for me.” He paused and took a deep breath.

Tom was sitting across the table with his mouth open and an expression that Dan will never

forget, though he could not describe it; he had never seen it before.

It took tremendous effort for him to continue, “I went to Ron Falcon with this question

and he has been helping me understand what you and I can do differently. To be clear, I

positioned it as my question. I did not want your name in this; you still have a long career

ahead of you.” “What I shared with you last week were my learnings through Ron’s help.”

Tom’s shock and surprise were replaced by something that could probably be best

described as gratitude. He tried hard to recall what Dan had explained last week but could not

as he was not listening then.

Tom cleared his dry throat and said, “Dan I must also apologize as I was too flustered and

actually did not listen to you. Can you please repeat it for me?”

“I well understand it Tom. The fault is mine as I was unable to engage you. I do plan to

take you through the whole learning.”
