        8. Medicare Overview – Keeping Your Coverage.

Most Medicaid long-term care recipients also have Medicare. It is important to understand how

these two programs work together and to maintain your Medicare coverage.

Medicare and Medicaid: How They Work Together
Medicare is still your primary insurance for hospital stays, doctor visits, and medical care.

Medicaid covers long-term care services and may help pay Medicare premiums,
             deductibles, and copayments.
Having both is called being "dually eligible" and provides comprehensive coverage.

Maintaining Your Medicare Parts A and B
Do not drop your Medicare Part B coverage. Even though Medicaid provides long-term care,
Medicare Part B is essential for doctor visits, outpatient services, and medical equipment. If you

qualify for QMB or another Medicare Savings Program, Medicaid will pay your Part B premium.

Medicare Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage)

As a dual eligible (Medicare and Medicaid) recipient, you qualify for Extra Help (Low Income
Subsidy) with Medicare Part D costs. This means little to no premium and very low copays for
prescription drugs. You should be automatically enrolled in a Part D plan but verify that your
prescriptions are covered by your plan.

Important: Do not cancel or change your Medicare coverage without consulting our office or a
        benefits counselor first.
