6. Information Regarding Supplemental Insurance
Many Medicaid recipients also have Medicare coverage. Understanding how
supplemental insurance works with your Medicaid is important.6a. Waiver Recipients
(In-Home Care/ALF)
If you are on the LTC Waiver and also have Medicare, you may benefit from a Medicare
Advantage plan, particularly a Dual Eligible Special Needs Plan (D-SNP). These plans are
designed specifically for people who have both Medicare and Medicaid and often provide
additional benefits such as reduced prescription costs, dental, vision, and hearing coverage,
transportation to medical appointments, and over-the-counter allowances.
If you qualify for the Qualified Medicare Beneficiary (QMB) program, Medicaid will pay your
Medicare Part B premiums and may also cover deductibles and copayments.
6b. In-Home Care Recipients
For those receiving care at home, your Medicare coverage remains important for medical care,
hospital stays, and skilled nursing care. Your Medicaid LTC plan coordinates with Medicare to
provide long-term care services not covered by Medicare, such as personal care assistance
and homemaker services. Consider whether a D-SNP or traditional Medicare with Medicaid as
secondary coverage best meets your needs.
6c. Assisted Living Facility (ALF) Residents
ALF residents with both Medicare and Medicaid should maintain their Medicare coverage for
medical care. The Medicaid LTC waiver covers assistance with activities of daily living but does
not cover room and board. A D-SNP plan can help reduce out-of-pocket medical costs and
may provide additional benefits that enhance your quality of life.
FFF Friendly Tip: Understanding Medicare and its supplement programs is not for the faint of
heart, before making any changes to your Medicare coverage, consult with a benefits
counselor or our office for a referral to a trusted partner who specializes in such coverages to
ensure the change will not negatively impact your care.
