John
Muir
John Muir was born
in April 1838 in Dunbar,
United Kingdom. John
Muir had seven broth-
ers. John Muir's family is
Scottish. He moved from
Scotland to a farm near
Portage with his family. A
longtime Dixon resident
who was the last surviving
grandson of California's
most renowned naturalist
and conservationist, John
Muir, and the youngest of
his ten grandchildren. Ross
was born eight years after
John Muir passed.
He helped preserve Yosemite National Park and was the first president of it. He used to have a
career of making machines but he abandoned that career because he almost lost an eye working there.
He had preserved Yosemite but business interests made him struggle.
John Muir helped create several national parks including Sequoia (1890), Mount Rainier (1899)
and Grand Canyon (1908). He wrote "only Uncle Sam" could save our country's land for future genera-
tions to enjoy, an idea that led to the creation of the National Park Service in 1916.
John Muir was perhaps this country's most famous and influential naturalist. If it weren't for John Muir
and his writings, we probably would not have Yosemite National Park as we know it today. He was
also involved in the creation of the Grand Canyon, Kings Canyon, Petrified Forest, and Mount Rainier
National Parks.
I learned that John Muir was a very famous, influential naturalist and conservationist. He
helped create and preserve many national parks. He was also the first president of the Yosemite Na-
tional Park. He died on December 24, 1914.
