118 The Unforgettable Moments in Life

                                         Taking the Training Wheels Off

                                                        By K. Mendez

Tempe, Arizona is a pretty big city with a lot of modern homes and buildings and lots of

new technology, but at this point in time, it wasn't very big. The city was more of a desert filled

with old houses. One hot day during the summer, I was riding my little, blue bike with little,

white training wheels drenched in sweat from the very hot temperatures. My brother was right

beside me on his bike. He knew how to ride bikes way better than me, so he had a bigger bike

without training wheels. I was tired of looking like I was bad at riding. I wanted to feel older, so I

decided that I was ready to make the biggest upgrade, taking my training wheels off.

I wanted to show my brother that I was as good as him, and as I thought this, we

approached the biggest hill in my neighborhood. I saw this as my big opportunity to impress my

brother and show him how good I was. Before I let out a word, he looked at me and said, “I dare

you to ride down the hill”. He didn't have to tell me twice. I got off my bike and took the little,

shiny white training wheels off . I thought it was my turn to show my brother how good I was.

I hopped back up on my little, blue bike but this time without training wheels. My palms

were sweaty and my ams were weak. The hill was looking at me and I was looking at it. Without

any hesitation, I rose my feet off the hot pavement with a big push. As I was going down the hill,

I felt the wind rush past my face. I was flying down the hill. It felt like I was going 100 miles per

hour. It was the fastest I had ever gone on my bike and in my head, I thought I was going to

make it to the bottom of the hill and show my brother that I had conquered the biggest hill in the

neighborhood. But as I thought this, my handlebars started shaking and wobbling. I tried

grabbing the brakes, but as I did, I looked down and saw my handlebars come up under me. I
