164 The Unforgettable Moments in Life
Swimming in Majuro
By Shawn Muller
My dad told me that he was from the Marshall Islands. He described it to be hot
and sunny and the islands are small, so you can just walk anywhere. He grew up in Majuro,
which is the main island. He came to the US to
finish school by himself. He stayed with his
uncle here in Arkansas.. He went to Springdale
High School before he met my mom. He says
really good things about the Marshall Islands.
He remembers when he would come back from
school and feed the pigs so they could grow and sell
them.
One story he told me was about when he was
swimming deep underwater. He had a cramp and he
pulled his toes trying to figure out what to do. He told me
that if you pull your toes then your cramp will go away
faster than just waiting and letting it cramp. He pulled his toes, but he could barely breathe. He
struggled to swim back up. He made it, but he almost drowned. He learned how to stop cramps
underwater and now I do. He said it was almost dark and it was a bit creepy.
