18 The Unforgettable Moments in Life
Least Favorite Tradition
By A. Rodriguez
Coach Powell is a social studies teacher and
dance coach at Lakeside Junior High School. She is
very kind and cares about all her students. Coach
Powell spends her Christmas break in Peru with her
husband's family. They both visit there to see his side
of the family. It's one of her least favorite things to do during Christmas break because it is a
culture shock. She has experiences she does not have at home. She also misses her family a lot,
and she can't stop thinking about them because she feels like she is missing people from her life.
One of the culture shocks is that she stays up until midnight to open gifts and eat
dinner. Another shock is the fireworks and alarms that go off. She is not used to all that noise; it
is wild and very loud. In Peru, it is very hot during Christmas. She was really shocked since in
the USA, it gets cold around Christmas. Overall she misses her family where you can eat before
midnight, open gifts the next day, and stay cozy and warm around the fire. It is also quiet and
calm. Coach Powell says that being around her family is better for her. She thinks having to
learn new things takes time. Staying up till midnight to eat and open presents is new for her.
She does have fun with her husband's family because it is fun to do things together... One of her
favorite things to do in Peru is going down to the beach because Peru does have one of the
biggest beaches. She likes to go down in December and be in the water with her husband and his
family. She thinks it's one of the best things to do over there during the month of December.
