16 The Unforgettable Moments in Life

When I was 12 years old I
started making quilts. I can
remember my mom sitting by the
table on a sunny day cutting out
materials and then sewing them
together. It would take hours, days,
or even years for her to finish a
quilt. We had a big family, so we
needed a lot of quilts to keep warm.
My mother had many patterns passed down for generations, and I have continued to add more
patterns as I use them.
Each mother in our family tries to teach their children and grandchildren how to sew and
quilt. Some of them really enjoy it and others do not so much. I have noticed that each generation
gets a little less interested in holding on to this tradition, and it makes me sad to think that one
day there will be no one left to pass on the knowledge.
If someone was having a baby, my mom would make a baby quilt. For boys, she would
do a Bow Tie quilt that had all different types of colors with the main color blue. For girls, she
would do a Sunbonnet Sue quilt with different colors but with the main color pink and purple. I
have carried that tradition with me. When my grandchildren finish high school, I make them a
