African American History and Culture
Our Carole Robertson Memorial activities educated the entire chapter on African American
History and Culture. Our families received the book and movie “The Watsons’ Go to
Birmingham” This book is a historical fiction novel first published in 1995 Although fictional
the story provides a great background of the historical events surrounding the 1963 16th Street
Baptist church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. This racially targeted bombing took the lives
of 4 young girls, including Carole Robertson.
Our families were tasked to read the novel and work through study questions to help gain a better
understanding and engage in dialogue with each other on the racial and civil unrest in American
during this time period. After reading the book each family watched the movie together to
reinforce the history learned.
Work of a Black Author
Our Carole Robertson Memorial activities highlighted the work of a Black Author. Our families
received the book “The Watsons’ Go to Birmingham” a novel by, Christopher Paul Curtis, an
African American author. This book is a historical fiction novel first published in 1995 Although
fictional the story provides a great background of the historical events surrounding the 1963 16th
