The North Texas Chapter Junior and Senior teens will be exploring the 2 leadership module
Vision and all grade groups have successfully incorporated financial literacy modules into their
programming calendar. A sample of each is below:
Leadership Development Module
The Junior and Senior Teens will learn about financial leadership development on a weekend trip
touring 2-3 HBCUs. The teens will research and prepare discussion questions regarding
leadership on a college campus. They will also engage with student leaders on campus during a
panel discussion regarding the role and impact of student leaders and how they got there. This
will allow the Jacks and Jills to understand the importance of having and executing a vision
when taking on leadership roles.
Financial Literacy Module
The Junior and Senior Teens will also learn about financial literacy on a weekend trip touring 2-3
HBCUs. The teens will research the cost of attendance for each college and develop a weekly,
monthly, and annual budget for attending college, inclusive of room, board, educational and
extracurricular expenses. They will also learn about various philanthropic, social, civic, and
leadership opportunities available to them during their college experience. At the end of the
weekend trip each teen will be required to complete an essay on the cost and benefit of an HBCU
experience.

Virtual National Park Tour/Effie Monroe
Our Spurs and Chili Peppers participated in a tour of National parks and Volcanos that
emphasized the Science behind Volcanos. African American Author and Jack and Jill Legacy,
Arynetta Floyzelle created the fictional character Effie Monroe to help with this educational
activity. Effie Monroe took the children on a virtual tour of a several national parks educated
them on volcanic eruptions, lava, and the various gasses expelled from a volcanic event. They
also discussed the regional and global impacts of volcanos on the climate and contribution to
mass extinctions.
Health
Mental Health: Ending the Silence
Our Mavericks hosted a Mental Health activity on September 19th in partnership with the local
NAMI chapter. During this even the children a) reviewed the “Ending the Silence” presentation
that included several mini videos that generated discussion about the warning signs of mental
health conditions and what steps to take if you or a loved one are showing symptoms of a mental
health condition and b) discussed personal journeys of recovery with the facilitators from
NAMI. Through interactive activities the children were able to gain a better understanding of
mental health issues in children and provided with resources to access help.
