“Lie still. Where does it hurt?”, she asked.
In a strained muffled voice he replied “Everywhere but especially my right
arm”.
Amelia took a closer look. She could see that the reason for the arm hurting
was because it was badly broken.
Amelia yelled out instructions. “Harry, tell your grandpa to call an ambulance.
James and Ellie fetch a piece of wood about arm length and bandages from the
yard. Bells, you will have to help me set the arm”.
Everyone did as they were told. Amelia assured the man that everything was
under control and he just needed to keep still until help arrived. Moments later,
Ellie and James returned with the piece of wood and bandages.
“Now”, said Amelia, “this is going to hurt, but it could be hours before the
ambulance arrives so I am going to make you more comfortable by putting your
arm in a splint.”
The man looked worried.
“Why will it be a long time before an ambulance comes”, asked the man.
“Because of ‘coronavirus’ “, said Ellie feeling very proud of herself for being so
knowledgeable of current affairs.
Ellie passed Amelia the piece of wood while James unwrapped a bandage.
“No, Ellie, you hold the piece of wood against his arm when I say, and you
James wrap the wood against his arm on my command,” said Amelia.
Amelia pulled the broken arm straight. The man screamed with pain.
“Right”, said Amelia, “Bells hold his wrist and pull his arm away from his
shoulder, Ellie hold the piece of wood along his arm and James start
bandaging”.
The man yelped again.
“Don’t be such a woose!”, said Amelia. “You will be comfortable soon”.
While James wound the bandage around the man’s arm, Amelia made sure that
it was tight and would do the job.
James was very impressed with Amelia’s first aid but did feel a bit unwell at the
sight of the broken arm being put straight.
Harry reappeared with Grandpa in tow.
