Chapter 4. The lambs get out
It was early afternoon and Grandpa had just finished his lunch after a busy
morning on the farm when the phone rang.
“Hello”, said Grandpa.
“Is that Mr Farrant?” said the caller.
“Yes, it is”, said Grandpa.
“I was just driving down the hill past your farm when I noticed some of your
lambs were out on the bank at the side of the road”.
“OK, thank you very much. I will get onto it straightaway”, said Grandpa.
He called the gang together and told them what had happened.
“I need all the help that I can get as young lambs can be very difficult to catch”,
said Grandpa.
“Leave it with us, Grandpa”, said Harry. “I will get it organised. Bells, call up
Amelia and Jackson and tell them to go to the top of Cat Lane to stop the lambs
running on to Limebridge Green and Swotting.”
Bells called Amelia who was delighted to be able to help. Jackson thought it
would be quicker if they raced up in their daddy’s gator. “But Daddy is not
here”, said Amelia somewhat confused by Jackson’ suggestion.
“I’ve watched Daddy drive it so many times, I think I can manage it”, replied
Jackson.
So off the they went to the gator. Jackson jumped into the driver’s seat and
realised that his feet didn’t reach the pedals. “I’ll have to stand up”, he said and
started the engine. The gator roared into life and Jackson stood on the pedals
and off they went. Driving up Cat lane was very bumpy but what an adventure.
They had to pick their way around fallen trees and large holes. Once at the top,
Jackson stopped the gator and they got out and stood guard at the top of the hill
to await further instruction.
Meanwhile, Grandpa had driven the gang to the bottom of the hill in his pickup.
“I am going to block the road so cars don’t come up here while we are catching
them. I had better stay with the pickup to explain to drivers what is happening”,
said Grandpa.
